Yes, I am still alive!

As you can see, this site isn't being actively updated at the moment. I've decided to, for now, remove both the 'post a review' and the 'upcoming movies' section.

The database as it is will remain here for everyone to use. I doubt there is a more complete database of this genre in existence. And maybe I'll be back to update it now and then!

In the meantime though, the forum is there for discussion of any upcoming stuff, and the chat is also available to any who wish to use it.

The Wolfman has arrived! In theatres now!

Critical reactions have been mixed. There have been very few who have outright disliked the film - most simply expressing disappointment at missed potential. Almost all are willing to concede that it is, at least, a passionate attempt at a traditional horror tale.


Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times: "What you might like to know is that The Wolfman has been made with care by Joe Johnston, and is well-photographed by Shelly Johnson and designed by Rick Hendrichs. The music by Danny Elfman creeps around the edges. Del Toro makes Lawrence sad, worried, fearful, doomed."

Mark Savlov, Austin Chronicle: "There's plenty of doom, gloom, and outright despair on hand here but very little genuine human emotion. Ultimately that's what both separates us from and binds us to the beast within. Beware the moon, lads, and stick to the road."

Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly: "Lawrence, you see, has no desire to be a werewolf. He doesn't get off on the power of the dark side; he just wants to be free of it. And that lends The Wolfman, hokey and uneven though it is, the kind of authentic emotional hook that too many horror movies today don't have."

A.O. Scott, The New York Times: "... The Wolfman spins in agnostic limbo, neither fantastical enough to be thrilling nor realistic enough to be genuinely disturbing. The aural and visual trappings of horror are there — in Danny Elfman’s throbbing, stabbing score and in a sound design replete with growls, howls, creaks and shrieks — but the dread never quite takes hold."

Ty Burr, The Boston Globe: "The Wolfman knows the old horror classics had pure pulp running through their veins, and it honors those cheap thrills with gusto. This isn’t a great movie - it’s just a good dog."

The Wolfman Approaches ...

Okay, lots of buzz going on right now, as you'd expect with the release of The Wolfman fast approaching. February 12th is the date I've no doubt you've already got marked on your calendars.

Universal have today released the box-set of their old She-Wolf of London TV show as a tie-in with the release. Hmm, seems like a good excuse to finally complete that episode guide ...

Several publications will be running special features on "werewolves in movies" ahead of the big day. So far I've been contacted by a couple of journalists from the US to make contributions to articles. This is good for the website, in terms of the extra publicity, and also good for me as I finally get to put all this seemingly useless knowledge to use. So please do send an e-mail if you'd like to publish my ramblings.

EDIT: Also worth noting that last week Werewolf-Movies.com broke its record number of weekly hits. The previous records had always been set at Halloween - with the final week of October 2008 and 2009 being the busiest periods the site had ever seen. The Wolfman hype has just blown those records out of the water.

TV Updates

I have started work on bring the TV section up to date. I have reviewed the pilot episode of surreal animated show Superjail!, which features a werewolf storyline.

I've also updated information on Being Human (in preperation for a full episode guide at some point), and added Sanctuary and The Wild Wild West.

I have started bringing the Upcoming Movies section up to date. You'll notice a lot of titles have been removed. Either these projects are canceled or in limbo, or they have been released and will be added to the main database.

New Years Resolutions Suck.

I hate the whole concept of new years resolutions. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong the idea of wanting to change your life and do the things you should be doing ... but the tradition itself is all based around this depressing notion that come the following December, you will have fallen back into your old habits. The inevitability of human nature.

Having said that a new decade must be worth at least one resolution, right?

Werewolf-Movies.com has been alive for about five and a half years. It doesn't feel like that long. I had to do a whois lookup to try and find the date I registered the domain, and sure enough there it is; June 2004.

In its early days, it used to look something like this:

It was a plain HTML website that used frames, but it did boast much the same level of content that it does now. In June 2007 I made the decision to redesign the site and build it into a functioning PHP database. The end result of that is what you see now.

The site gets hundreds of visitors every day. 63.51% of visitors come here through a simple Google search for 'werewolf movies'. Curiously, the most visitors the site has ever had in a single day was on last Halloween.

As you can see, it hasn't been updated in quite a while. This isn't the first time I have disappeared from maintaining the site for months on end. Werewolf movies were an obsession of mine for a long time, but I have a habit of getting distracted by my various other obsessions.

But that's what resolutions are for, right?

I have begun the process of inputting all the visitor reviews that have been submitted over the past year or so. There are a lot. If any of yours end up getting missed, either they were lost in the spam or they were ineligible for some reason.

Once that's all up to date, I'll be working on bringing the other areas of the site up to speed.

News & Reviews

Let's see, news, news .... The Sci-Fi Channel original movie Never Cry Werewolf has now aired, and Timberwolf has been kind enough to review it for us.

Following an online petition, the BBC have commisioned a six-episode series for Being Human, to begin airing in 2009. Yaaay! In less positive news, the upcoming Trick 'r Treat movie has been dropped by Warner Bros, and a new distributor has yet to buy it. Booo.

Finally, for all you werewolf porn enthusiasts (don't try to deny it), An Erotic Werewolf in London is now available on DVD pre-order, to be released on June 24.

Reviews: "The Werewolf" (1956) + "The Man and the Monster" (1959)

So I've come up with this new concept of doing 'double feature' werewolf movie reviews, which may help me get through this insane backlog of unwatched movies a bit quicker.

Tonights theme is werewolf movies from the fifties, starting with The Werewolf (1956) and then a brief trip across the border to find "El Hombre y el Monstrou", otherwise known as The Man and the Monster (1959). What have I learnt from watching these two movies? Primarily, never trust scientists or pianists. Or the devil.

I've finally got round to reviewing Rob Zombie's fake trailer for Werewolf Women of the SS, created as part of Tarantino's "Grindhouse" project.

I'll get back to reviewing real movies soon, I promise. Maybe a Howling VI review from TheDamnedThing will keep you happy in the meantime.

Meet the Wolf Man!

Heeere's wolfie! The creators of the new Wolf Man movie have finally given us a look at Benicio Del Toro all dolled up as the Wolf Man. Verdict? Well, I'll let you decide for yourself. They've definitely stayed pretty close to the original design, but also given a nice fresh edge to it. I reckon good ol' Jack Pierce would probably crap himself if he saw this. See more of the Wolf Man and read an interview with makeup artist Rick Baker over at Entertainment Weekly.

I've had a bit of a backlog of submitted reviews lately, so there's a bunch of new ones from the likes of Brandon, LupaLover, Christine, Steven522, SilverWolf, MrDragon811 and MetalVixen. I also still have a couple of your recommendations still to post so please bear with me on that.

Review : "Wild Country" + updates

Have a review of Wild Country, a nice low-budget Scottish werewolf movie presumably inspired by Dog Soldiers. I've been a bit lazy lately, which means I have a backlog of about fifty werewolf movies lying around that I need to review. No exaggeration. Maybe I should overdose on coffee and stay up for a hundred-hour werewolf movie marathon. Or not ...

I also have a handful of upcoming movies to add. For now I thought I'd let you know that Animals has a teaser trailer which you can watch here, and the long-awaited Guardians of Luna has been given a whole new look and now promises a feature-length pilot, but still no word on when it will come to air. Joe Johnston is the new director for The Wolf Man, which has been pushed back yet again to May next year but should finally begin filming in London sometime this month.

Jack and Diane, which you may remember as that weird upcoming lesbian movie featuring the young "Juno" stars Ellen Page and Olivia Thirlby, has been pushed back to 2010 and it looks likely that Page may have dropped out. What, lesbian werewolf roles too good for you now that your an oscar nominee? Tsk!

Review : "Being Human"

Greetings! I've reviewed the new BBC Three television pilot Being Human, which if you live in the UK you can watch online here. Very promising show.

It's also being repeated on BBC Three this Sunday at 10.

Review : "Werewolf : The Devil's Hound" + New Additions

I've reviewed the new movie Werewolf : The Devil's Hound. Surprisingly good at times for an independent werewolf movie, if a little disjointed overall.

Also a couple of made-for-TV movies from last year have been added to the database, Sky One's Hybrid and ABC Family's Nature of the Beast.

New and Upcoming Werewolf Movies

I still have a few more new and upcoming movies to add, but this should get you started. Three independent werewolf movies have come out in the last couple of months, and they are Werewolf : The Devil's Hound (formerly known as "Lycan"), Lycanthropy and Cold-Blooded.

I also heard from the good people behind the upcoming Death Walks the Streets trilogy:

"You might've already heard that we recently parted ways with the production company that had been attached to DWTS for the past 2 and a half years. That said, we're back on track and moving forward faster than ever before. As of January 1st, the project is back in the hands of the creators. While our fingers are crossed for a 2008 release, if we've learned anything in the past couple of years, it's that nothing is certain. As far as the "Trilogy" goes, the screenplays for the first two chapters are complete. Work continues on part III, along with our soon-to-launch comic series. While DWTS I promises some heavy werewolf action, all we can say about DWTS II so far is that fans of the shape-shifting alliance should be pleased. Above all, we're just looking forward to bringing a great movie to life and sharing it with the fans that have supported us in our journey."

Updates

Righty-ho, I've just about brought the upcoming movies section back up to date.

The third movie in the Underworld saga has now been given a title, Underworld : Rise of the Lycans, and Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen and Shane Brolly are all set to reprise their roles while Rhona Mitra (of Skinwalkers) stars in it. The Cirque Du Freak adaptation has also begun casting, with Salma Hayek and John C Reilly heading up the cast list. So far so good!

Lots of movies being rescheduled as usual, it's probably no surprise that The Wolf Man has been pushed back yet again to February of next year while Trick 'r Treat has been shoved a full year so we'll now see it this halloween instead. Death Walks the Streets ought to be out this year, and it's now being advertised as the first in a trilogy.

The Mark of the Wolf webisode series should be available online real soon, and in the meantime you can watch the trailer. No sign of
Neowolf lately, it looks like that one will be going straight to DVD. The official website for the "Bubba the Redneck Werewolf" movie has disappeared, so I'm guessing that project has fallen through for now. Boohoo.

Independent movies "Lycan" (now titled "Werewolf : The Devils Hound"), "Lycanthropy" and "Cold-Blooded" have all been finished so I'll be adding those to the main database later.
