For me, it was a letdown. Granted, I prefer werewolves to wolf-men, any day, so that may have colored my take:
1. I wasn't a fan of the makeup -- especially the teeth (see above comment)
2. **spoiler(ish)** the end felt a lot like the end of "Wolf", with Jack Nicholson
3. I didn't understand the motivation of the Wolf-Man -- why, when he transformed, did he kill everyone? I could understand killing for food or when cornered/endangered, but it always feels cheap to me when monsters kill everyone for no apparent reason; animals seldom go on killing sprees, and we were led to believe he was mostly animal there
I enjoyed the movie but was a little disappointed. It seemed to move too quickly at the expense of character development. I would have liked to have seen more of Lawrence's emotional torment (outside the sanitarium). I wasn't convinced of the relationship (bond) between Lawrence and Gwen - again, no time was spent developing it. I'm assuming they tried to stay true to the original 1941 version?
Was definitely a shiny but mute movie, really good horror plays with the mind even if they are just monster movies. Then people will know why, and that can be the scariest thing, because we might want to empathize if we were in a similar spot.
I really liked this movie. I rented it on DVD and watched the unrated version, which gave you more details on the movie. A lot of the cuts they made really needed to be in the theatrical version. I think that is why some of you were disappointed. Heck, if Lord of the Rings can make a movie 2 plus hrs. long, why did this movie get cut so short? As why he kills, that is why he's a monster. He was cursed. Monsters kill!!!! His teeth were perfect. Not sure why some think his teeth were not cool. Too critical!! This movie was to pay homage to the original Lon Chaney Jr. movie of Wolfman. I give it A+ rating and if you were expecting a Howling (which sucked!) or American Werewolf in London (which is cool), take it for what it is.
Having read the book prior to watching the movie, I was truly disappointed. Even though I typically expect the books to be better, this was a sad letdown. I wasnt sure why Benicio Del Toro was selected, other than his appearance, reminiscent of Lon Chaney Jr. with his sad, love me, hate me looks. And this movie failed to define the relationships between father/son, Lawrence/Gwen, and between Lawrences father/Gwen. Furthermore, the scenes in the gypsy camp, were lacking. The movie was pointless. I am however inspired. Since I seem to be unable to get what I seek from most werewolf movies, I have decided to write one of my own. Prepare yourselves for a new twist among werewolves, prepare for the extreme!!
I find 98% of the criticism for this movie stems from it not being Underworld. Get over it. It's a different kind of movie from that kitsch. It is a horror movie, not a romcom or a book, so obviously there's not going to be as much focus on character development. Seriously people. Stop being mad at an apple because it's not an orange. Great, fun movie. I love the throwback to the early style.
Let's be truthful...this movie was terrible..who is the hell ever told that guy that he can play an englishman..who ever it was needs to be severely beaten. In addition, the script was awful, NO DIRECTION things just drifted from scene to scene, the only good thing was the scenery...after that forget it.."the muppets are scarier than this movie"

Indeed, there were a number of relationships in the movie that could have been explored further, Lawrence and Gwen and also Lawrence and his father.
And yes, previous poster, I was not a big fan of the ending either! Not even the first time I saw it, in Wolf! ;)

Did anyone care to review following the extended cut or was it all left to be after the theatrical release?
